Course Overview:

Performance Management and Coaching is an interactive workshop designed to help managers effectively coach and support employees while setting performance goals and expectations and aligning them to the organization’s strategies. The workshop also prepares managers to better observe and measure performance against agreed upon goals and standards, and evaluate and reward performance based on their observations. The model incorporates communication, coaching, and feedback as critical competencies for successfully managing performance.

Key Modules
Module One – Business Case for Effective Performance Management and Coaching
  • Define performance management as an ongoing collaborative process that includes, but not limited to, performance appraisals
  • Discuss the benefits to the organization, individual, and the manager
  • Define the manager’s and employee’s role in the process
Module Two – Pre-Planning
  • Gather information and data
  • Prepare staff for the process
Module Three – Performance Planning: Setting and Aligning
  • Collaborate with the employee to set goals and standards that are aligned with the organization’s strategies
  • Work with the employee to define key duties and criteria for success
  • Develop a performance plan that addresses the needs of the employee and the organization
  • Collaborate with the employee to establish a development plan
  • Develop a performance plan that addresses the needs of the employee and the organization
Module Four – Coaching and Feedback: Measure and Modify
  • Monitor and describe observed performance in measurable terms
  • Plan and conduct a coaching session using basic coaching competencies
  • Provide feedback that reinforces and rewards superior performance
  • Provide developmental feedback to address sub-par performance
  • Confirm and document agreements
Objectives:

At the conclusion of the workshop participants should be able to:

  • Define their role in the performance management process
  • Assist their employees in understanding their role in the performance management process
  • Collaborate with employees to set and agree upon performance goals and expectations that are aligned with the organization’s strategic plan, and the department’s or team’s goals
  • Identify key duties and success criteria
  • Observe and document employee’s performance in measurable terms
  • Develop a performance plan that addresses the organization’s and employee’s needs
  • Plan and prepare for a coaching session
  • Conduct collaborative coaching sessions that use feedback to reinforce superior performance and/or address areas for improvement
  • Collaborate with the employee to create an action plan
