Overview: |
The problem of governance and leadership is widespread;
gaps and voids in leadership and key positions continue
to cause great concerns for organizations in the public
and private sectors. The practice of using short sited
approaches such as multi-functioning, cross training,
overstaffing, fill-ins are no longer effective in
a time when organizations are asked to slim down and
decrease operational costs.
Times have changed; in previous decades, most jobs
did not require extensive qualifications, and seniority
as measured by time with an organization was sufficient
to ensure advancement. Very few organizations have
the luxury of overstaffing in the face of competition
or economic restructuring efforts. For these reasons,
organizations must take proactive steps to plan for
future talent needs at all levels and implement programs
that are designed to ensure that the right people
are available for the right jobs, at the right time,
to meet organizational requirements. One way that
organizations can ensure that this occurs, is to develop
and implement a Succession Planning and Management
(SP&M) program.
